Start from the game, not the clan list

The full clan directory is useful if you already know a name. If you do not, open the games directory, pick your title, and use that game hub's clan list instead. Every clan on it has tagged the game itself, so you are looking at communities that actually play it rather than whatever matched a search box.

Read the signals that mean something

Member count tells you scale, and nothing else. A large clan can be dormant.
Recent wall activity is the honest measure. Posts in the last week mean people are talking.
Upcoming events are the strongest signal of all: a clan running a session every weekend will still be running one next month.
Platform, region and language are on the clan's profile. A clan you cannot queue with because of a time zone or a platform is not a fit, however good it looks.

Send a request that gets answered

Use the clan's join form and say what you play, when you are usually online, and what you are looking for. The request goes to the owner and admins, who accept or decline; you are notified either way. There is no limit on asking more than one clan while you decide.

If nothing fits

Post a Looking For Play request for the game so people come to you, or start your own clan — it takes one person and a game tag.
